How do you Handle Rejection?

During a Facebook live event on Tuesday night, several people asked me essentially the same question:

"When it comes to risks, how do you deal with rejection?"

Great question.

Here are three ways God is helping me deal with times (or experiences) involving rejection.

This video clip is the wildest, most intense rejection moment I've ever faced:

1. Rejection = Promise.

Jesus was rejected and promised His followers they could anticipate the same.

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” (John 15:18).

When we risk, and are rejected, fear, insecurity, and intimidation assault our faith, hope, love (and often our ego, pride, arrogance).

No one likes rejection.
Fewer welcome it.

2. Rejection = Treasure.

Realizing that developing a life of risk isn’t to ignore rejection when it does show up; it is to taste—even for a slight moment—the highest price of treasuring Jesus.

“The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” (Luke 10:16).

Jesus was rejected in his own hometown.
He was rejected in Jerusalem.
I can only assume He disliked rejection as much as you or I.
Never did He shy away from rejection, though, even proving on the cross that His heart was pure and unoffended.

3. Rejection = Reminder.

The experience of rejection, whenever it comes (and if you follow Jesus, it will come), is a reminder to love regardless of the response.

More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (Romans 5:3-5)
